Leadership is about YOU, not them
How to Turn Overwhelmed Managers Into Inspiring Leaders

Gallup just released global data that shows that 70% of a team’s engagement is determined by one person: their manager.
Here’s the problem with that: Most managers have never been trained to manage. They are promoted for their performance, not for their leadership. And per Gallup, “Now they are breaking under the combined pressure of employee expectations and executive demands.”
Here’s what that situation looks like (compliments of my early career): One of my first jobs out of college was in marketing for a trade association. I was pretty new at putting my newly minted degree into practice, but I was young and confident and “knew” how to get things done. For some reason, they gave me someone to supervise, thinking that I was pretty smart and a good person and would be successful as a supervisor.
Let’s put this into perspective. I was in my early 20’s, learning A LOT about how business really worked. I had not only never supervised anyone before, I had zero training or coaching on how to do that.
To say my performance was a spectacular failure would be correct.
That job and I weren’t together very long.
If this makes you makes you sheepishly say – “wow that sounds kind of familiar,” don’t beat yourself up. They told you that all you had to do was find or promote high performers and that they would “figure it out” – just like you did.
Doesn’t work.
If they aren’t figuring it out, here’s what to do:
- Stop thinking that they should (figure it out). They are learning 3 things at once:
- how to manage up (to you and/or your Board)
- how to manage their people
- how to manage themselves with the added responsibilities of A and B
- Update or be crystal clear on your business and quarterly plan, timing and what you need your managers to do. If your plan is in your head, your people can’t read your mind. Update it and share it – get them inspired to move forward. Let us know if you want to fast-track this – you have access to some amazing planning tools through ActionCOACH.
- Set your SMART goals and create an action plan. SMART means:
- When your new leaders have a roadmap, they have the fastest path to success.
